The Best Packing Cubes for Travel
Simple yet genius… Packing cubes or cells as they are also known as, have revolutionised the way people pack and travel. Enabling us to stay organised, neat and (in my opinion) pack less. Clothes arrive with fewer wrinkles and less damage (no danger of getting tangled or caught on edges when packed haphazardly into suitcases or backpacks.
There are hundreds of types of packing cells to pick from, so many that it is hard to know where to even begin… cubes, compression, small, large, pouch, sack, fabric or plastic. Packing cubes have become the go-to for travellers. I’ve used mine for holidays, over-nighters, the gym, work and storage. They have countless uses and are fantastic for storing clothes in a neat and compact manner whether at home or on the go.
Below is just a short list of what I consider to be the best of the bunch and why. Feel free to add your thoughts below!
Eagle Creek’s Pack-It system was one of the first packing systems to come out, and they are still one of the most popular brands available. The design of the ‘original’ set has not really changed, but at least they have expanded the range of colours and sizes. Made from Poly Micro-Weave Fabric that is machine washable, you can pick from the cubes, compression, packs and waterproof sacks.
My pick: the Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Starter Kit available on Amazon
The Best Packing Cubes for Compression
Overwhelmingly Gonex sits at the top for compression packing cubes. Starting at the size of a standard cube, they have an extra zip that compression the cube down until it is almost flat thereby saving even more space. As I am a compulsive over packer, these are very handy, though the second round of zips can strain a bit when closing them, overall these work very well.
If you have never used these before and are not sure where to start, then I suggest the Gonex Compression Packing Cubes which a set of 6 different sized cubes in a large range of colours.
Best for the Environment
Florious have a luggage cube set made from recycled plastic bottles, making them ideal for the environmentally conscious traveller. So far reviews have all been positive, with the reasonable price, durability and quality all praised. Though I would like to see more information on how and where these are made, it is good to see someone has taken the initiative and created a packing cube set using recycled plastic bottles.
Buy them from Amazon, there are only a small number left so hopefully Florius will restock again soon.
Amazon's Best Selling Packing Cubes
Shacke Pak have the highest number of ratings in the packing cube category on Amazon (currently at 8,391 and 4.8/5 stars), which made it worth looking at.
The set includes 4 different sized cubes and a laundry bag in a range of bright colours, and a distinctive ‘X’ shape on the front. Made from a high quality water resistant nylon, with double stitching and YKK zippers. The only thing to keep in mind with these are that they are hand wash in cold water only. But judging by the extremely high number of positive reviews, this is clearly not an issue.
Garment Packing Folders
These are an interesting alternative to packing cubes, and targeted towards shirts and more formal clothing items that tend to require ironing. I actually brought this one for my partner for him to use on an interstate business trip and was really surprised by how effective it was (as long I packed it for him of course!). The envelopes come with a plastic board which has folding instructions printed on them. If you follow the guide you will be surprised how few (if any) wrinkles your clothes will get, and by how much you can fit into the envelopes!
Try Dot 18 Inches Packing Folder in either red or black which come with 2 pieces, the Velcro and padding is extremely strong and has a very professional appearance.
