Why you should travel with a silk pillowcase
Whether you are staying in a budget hostel, or a 5 star hotel, the one accessory that you should always travel with is a silk pillowcase. Well, that and an eye mask!
There are a number of skin and hair benefits to be gained from sleeping on a silk pillowcase, besides the feeling of absolute luxury when your skin is next to such a soft and smooth fabric.
So what are some of the benefits and should you invest in a silk pillowcase and eye mask?
Silk is Hypoallergenic
Silk is naturally hypoallergenic, which makes is perfect for anyone who struggles with asthma or eczema.
Irritation can occur from a number of things, not least is the type of washing detergent used (I know of 2 brands I can’t use at all because they cause a skin reaction).
When you are staying in a place that is not your own, and you have no control over the environment, the cleaning products used or the actual cleaning standards, then it does pay to have your own pillow case that you can wash yourself in the shower or sink.
Since silk is naturally hypoallergenic, your skin will be less likely to flare up and you will be able to sleep better.
While you can buy silk ‘sleeping bags’ for travel (which I do recommended for dodgy hostels or camping) they can be a bit messy and a pain to unpack /pack each night.
Benefits of Silk for Hair
You might tie up your hair, leave it loose or put in a braid (me) before you go to bed, but I can guarantee when you wake up it is generally a mess!
When you sleep on cotton or polyester, the weave of the fabrics actually pulls at your skin and hair. Have you even woken up with creases on your face? That would be from your cotton pillowcase. I can honestly say I have never woken up with creases on my face from my silk pillowcase.
The silk fabric helps your hair to breathe and doesn’t hold heat, so you won’t wake up with that oil build up that tends to happen with cotton.
If you are someone who tends to toss and turn a lot, this can help prevent your hair from getting caught on the pillow case, reducing frizz and breakage.
Bonus points here for not having to style or wash your hair as much when travelling (it is annoying at the best of times!)
Benefits of Silk for your Skin
There are some arguments for saying that silk helps keep your skin moisturised. What it actually does is help prevent your skin from drying out.
This is because silk, due to its natural smoothness, doesn’t absorb anywhere near as much moisture from your skin that cotton does.
Just a note here that silk doesn’t prevent or clear up acne unfortunately. But it won’t make any existing acne worse either.
Silk Can Help Regulate Body Temperature
If you have ever had the luxury of sleeping on a full silk sheet set, you will know that it is a strange feeling. We are often used to sleeping on cotton or flannelette, which can get really hot, which means when the weather is warm you tend to wake up in a pool of sweat.
Silk on the other hand acts like a self regulator. It controls your body temperature by wicking away moisture, rather then absorbing it and letting it sit on you, so you stay cool and dry all night long.
What to look for when purchasing a silk pillowcase
Ideally you want to look for high quality silk, such as Mulberry Silk.
Mulberry silk is considered to be the equivalent of Egyptian cotton, with a really high momme (mm) which is fabric weight. The higher the momme, the better.
Of course, when budget is a concern, find a pillow that is half/half. Once side Mulberry Silk and the other cotton. They are much cheaper to buy.
Shhh Silk - The brand I recommend
My friends and family all know that I am an absolute sucker for small businesses, even when they are more expensive then large multinational companies. Most of my family have all been involved in small business or work for themselves, so it is something I am very much in favour of supporting.
Shhh Silk is an Australian home grown brand started when Olivia Carr (the founder) lost her silk pillowcase on a business trip. So she created her own! The business has been around since 2015 and has even gained its own celebrity following.
Shhh Silk truly believes that life’s little luxuries (such as a silk pillowcase and eye masks) should be affordable for everyone. That is something I can agree with!
Silk Face Masks
The latest addition to an already substantial range, face masks are becoming an essential item around the world. Because of the need to wash or dispose of face masks after each wear, it is our ecological responsibility to use face masks that are environmentally responsible and biodegradable.
Unless we are medical staff or working in high-risk environments, there is no need for medical grade PPE in everyday situations. And it is critical to ensure that the people who do need PPE have access to it.
So for going for walks, in elevators, to the shops or public transport, we should use fabric face masks. Besides being much more comfortable to wear and to breathe in, they are also washable.
Shhh Silk have created their own line of face masks made from 100% mulberry silk. The masks are double lined, have adjustable ear straps and have an extra piece of fabric cover that can be pulled over your nose or under your chin for extra comfort.

As someone who does sleep on a silk pillowcase and use a silk eye mask, I can honestly say it has made a massive difference on my hair.
I honestly can’t sleep without the eye mask, to the point that it became an ongoing joke with my last boyfriend! It truly makes a difference to the quality of sleep you get at night. When I lost my silk mask and brought the only mask I could find, I felt the difference immediately. The microfiber, while soft, was nowhere near as smooth and cool.
So yes, I truly believe and recommend that everyone should have a silk pillowcase at the very least. It is a small luxury that is well worth the price tag, and your face and hair will thank you for it.
When travelling, just pop it over the existing pillowcase and take it off in the morning… you don’t want a cleaner accidentally loosing it! Then again, that it what inspired the CEO of SHHH Silk to create her own brand of silk products…
